GARDEN UPDATE
God is so amazing. The things He created and lets us see are just so awesome!

For a few days now, we have been hearing a bird call we didn't recognize. It was very insistent but we kept looking up in the trees and could not find out who was making all that noise!

Today, as I was walking out to the front of the property to get the mail, I heard a rustling in the fallen tree limb that is in the front patio. Concerned that it might be a snake, I stood stock still. From under that giant fallen juniper branch, I heard that same bird call, Out came walking a Papa Desert Quail, followed closely by Mama, and as I held my breath, teeny, tiny adorable babies. They looked like thimbles on teeny legs, they were so small. They scurried away and I tried to quickly take a video, but all I got was a blur.

Seeing quail in our yard is a daily occurrence, but seeing babies is a real gift. Quail are notoriously secretive and protective with their babies, and I can see why, they are so tiny and vulnerable. Good thing they can run extremely fast, their tiny bobbers bouncing up and down. What a wonderful gift to be able to experience.

GARDEN GOODIES~SHARE OUR GARDEN RECIPE #0033 THE BEST FUDGE

So to celebrate National Candy Month I thought I would share my die-hard recipe for fudge. It is amazing, low fat and you make it in the microwave! It is my go-to recipe at Christmastime as thank-you-for-your-service for the delivery guys, doctor's staff, etc.

I will include some ideas for variations but the possibilities are endless!(Editor's Note: We have tried a TON of different varieties with great success but have found that butterscotch or vanilla chips will NOT work because of the missing cocoa butter element.)

 You Will Need:
(1) 8 oz pkg of chocolate chips
(1/2) of a 14oz can of sweetened condensed milk (NOT evaporated milk)
(1) T butter or margarine
(1  1/2) tsp vanilla extract

In a microwave safe bowl, melt chocolate chips until completely liquid.(1 to  1-/2 intervals stirring each time).
Stir in milk and butter or margarine. Microwave on HIGH for 1 minute. Stir in vanilla and any additional add-ons.
Line a pan with wax paper. Pour finished fudge into the pan and add sprinkles if desired. Chill until firm. Cut into squares.

Some Variations:

  • Rocky Road Fudge- Add mini marshmellows and chopped nuts
  • Cherry Chocolate: Add minced dry cherries
  • Reeses: Add (1) T peanut butter when you add the butter
  • Mint Chocolate Chip: Add mint chips OR use (1) tsp mint flavoring
  • Chocolate Almond: Add (1) tsp almond flavoring.
Nutrition Info: Per piece 54 cals, 3 g fat

WHAT IN THE WORLD? OVER THE GARDEN FENCE
On today in American history, people in gardens everywhere were talking about:
1866: American Indian Chief Seattle died in a village near the city that was named for him. FUN FACT: The term used for any run-down street in any city is often called 'skid row'. This name originated in the city of Seattle. During the Gold Rush, Seattle became a booming timber town. They would cut down the trees and 'skid' them down a long chute to the sawmill. The arae became the main street in Seattle and was called 'skid row'. After the business district moved north, the area became run down and a haven for drunks and derelicts. Skid Row soon became the name that was used for any dilapidated area of town.
1892: Homer Plessy was arrested for his refusal to leave a 'whites only' train car in Louisiana.
1913-The first successful ascent of Mt. McKinley
