THE LONE GUARDIAN 
Coming home the other day, I was struck by the beauty of a lone tree. It stood by itself in the middle of the desert, no other foliage around, a sparse area where there used to be a house. There was a fire and the house was destroyed long ago, yet this tree stayed on, everblooming.


I thought about the people who may have planted that tree and what their hopes and dreams for it were. Was it to become a tree where a swing for their children could hang happily? Did the young housewife bring bunches of the fragrant blossoms in and arrange them on the kitchen table for all to smell? Did it provide much needed shade for toiling landowners? Did they sit gratefully under its big branches with cold lemonade and talk about how hot it was? Did it stand guard there over generations of family, as they grew and brought their children to visit?

It's been many, many years since anyone has lived near there and yet the tree blossoms faithfully, showing off white bunches of fragrant plumes. It stands guard over a place where once maybe young voices laughed, children played and young men dreamed. A testimony to God's plan for us all, and how life goes on.
