Bird Tempting Treats

"Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns." George Eliot

JUST BLOOMED TODAY

AWKWARD PHOTO OF THE DAY

TWEET TREATS
bringing you the quirky, funniest and most interesting tweets from Twitter that we came across.
I would watch a TV channel that was just mean-looking musclemen lovingly petting dogs and cats. @trumpetcake

DID YOU KNOW...?
that cherry juice helps you sleep better. Recent finding: People who drank two ounces of tart cherry juice concentrate slept an average of 39 minutes longer and spent less time awake in bed. Cherry juice significantly increases levels of the sleep-regulating hormone melatonin in the body. Try drinking cherry juice concentrate 30-60 minutes before bedtime.
DOG CONFESSIONS

GARDEN UPDATE
In the 60's when I was watering this morning, pretty mild for the rest of the day. The mums are about to pop and they are always so lovely, I cannot wait.

It is also bulb planting time again, so those who are gonna, better get serious! My favorite place to find them: the 99 cent store chain. Or you can get great deals on multiples in a pack at palces like Osh. Martha Stewart even has a collection of blue only bulbs. If you missed our past blog on bulbs, you can revisit them:

It's getting to be the time when your local birds will either migrate and stay put. Most of our smaller stock stays put, because they know they have it made with us and we will feed them all through the winter. It's a big commitment, so if you don't plan to have food out regularly you should encourage them to migrate.

BUT, if you are going to help our feathered friends in time of cold, here is a great recipe to warm their little tummies and keep them with a fat layer to fight the cold wind.

You Will Need:
(1) cup cornmeal
(1) cup sugar
(1/2) cup flour
(3/4) cup water
(1) cup peanut butter
(1) cup lard
(1) cup raisins

Instructions:
In a medium bowl, mix the dry ingredients. Then add the water and mix. Put peanut butter and lard in a small bowl and microwave for 2 minutes. Add to the cornmeal mixture along with the raisins. Refrigerate for about two hours.

Pack mixture into small balls around a string. You can also use an apple on a string next to it, using a wine cork at the bottom, tied to the string, to keep the apple on. Put the balls in a thistle feeder (see above); Or, some people simple spread the mixture directly on tree limbs so more birds could get to it. With our ant situation around here, I don't believe we will be trying that one. My friend, Natalie, suggested using the netting that comes from your fruit and veggies as a holder...it would also give them something to grab onto while feeding.

Your birds will go nuts (pardon the pun) over your treat!
