PBJC

 " The Devil's Progress"

Thomas Kibble Hervey, 1849

He stood beside a cottage lone

And listened to a lute,

One summer's eve, when the breeze was gone,

And the nightingale was mute.

The moon was watching on the hill
The stream was staid, the maples still
In a voice like that of a bird!
of a heart that loved-, though it loved in vain
a grieving- and yet not a pain!-

A love that took an early root
And had an early doom
Like trees that never grow to fruit
and early, shed their bloom
Of vanished hopes and happy smiles
All lost for evermore;
Like ships that sailed for sunny isles
But never came to shore!

A flower, that in its withering
Preserved its fragrance, long
A spirit that had lost its wing
But, still, retained its song!

GARDEN UPDATE

Our new peach tree had a solo peach that is growing happily and lo and behold there's another! Really didn't expect to have fruit on this new tree so soon.

Baby grasshoppers are abundant on the mint, their favorite, where they can hide. They are soooo teeny tiny, tinier than a half an inch but we find them and they meet their Maker.

DID YOU KNOW...?
When Spanish explorers first encountered Mexican zinnias in the early 1500s, they found the flowers so scraggly and unappealing that they gave them a name meaning 'eyesore' in Spanish.

GARDEN GOODIES~SHARE OUR GARDEN RECIPE #0036 PBJC

I bet you're wondering what PBCJ is. Well, of course you know what PB and J is. Now just add the chicken and that's the "C"! This is a wonderful dish, perfect for the picky eater. Quick and easy to make and makes great left-overs. We served ours on top of Chinese Fried Rice with Almonds. So yummy and finger-licking good!

You Will Need:
(1) lb of boneless, skinless chicken breast strips (Editor's Note: If you cannot find the strips, ask your butcher or meat dept to cut for you. Usually they are happy to do this without charge.)
(3) T peanut butter, smooth or crunchy
(3) T soy sauce (we used a substitute- we used HuliHuli sauce from Hawaii)
(1) cup Cap'n Crunch, original flavor
garlic pepper salt
lemon pepper
dash of vinegar
(1) small bottle of apricot or peach jelly or jam
metal skewers (or if using bamboo, soak in water first)
pastry brush

Be sure to use proper safety practices here since you will be handling raw poultry. Never reuse knives or instruments that you used on raw poultry. Clean cutting boards and countertops thoroughly.

Oil down your racks and preheat your grill outside.

Take your chicken and thread them onto the skewers. Lay them out on a platter as you do them. Set aside.

In a microwave safe bowl, mix the peanut butter, garlic pepper, lemon pepper, vinegar and soy sauce. Cook on HIGH for about a minute...check your sauce. It should be liquidy, not clumped up. If this happens, add more soy sauce or a dash of Italian salad dressing. The consistency should be like melted icing.

Brush the sauce on both sides of your kebobs, and sprinkle more garlic pepper salt and lemon pepper to taste.Sprinkle on crushed Cap'n Crunch. Grill over low heat for approximately 4 minutes for the first side, and if it looks done, 3 minutes on the second side. Remove from heat and while meat is resting, brush with the apricot jam or jelly.Serve with your favorite side such as terakyi noodles or rice. Editor's Note: Remember if you used bamboo sticks, they have sharp ends and you might want to serve the meat off the sticks.

WHAT IN THE WORLD? OVER THE FENCE
On today in American history, people in gardens everywhere were talking about:
  • 1927 Newspaper reveals that Coolidge will be adopted in Sioux tribe
  • 1931 Riley and Harold Getty became the first to fly a single engine plane around the world in 8 days
  • 1973 President Richard Nixon's advisor, H.R. Halderman, tells the president to put pressure on the head of the FBI to "stay the hell out of this" (Watergate)
  • 1980 The David Letterman Show debuts on CBS TV
  • 1992  The "Teflon Don" John Gotti sentenced to life in prison
  • 1993 Lorena Bobbitt removes husband John Wayne Bobbitt's male organ
  • 2012 68 year old Bus Monitor Karen Klein is taunted by middle age school children in upper state NY
