Virtual Road Trip~New Zealand

"On an Eclipse of the Moon"

Walter Savage Landor

1775-1864

Struggling, and faint, and fainter didst thou wane, O Moon!
and round thee all thy starry train
Came forth to help thee, with half-open eyes,
And trembled every one with still surprise,
That the black Spectre should have dared assail
Their beauteous queen and seize her sacred veil.

VIRTUAL ROAD TRIP~NEW ZEALAND
I'm so excited to introduce the country of my forefathers~New Zealand, or its native Maori name Aotearoa, land of the long white cloud.
Mitre Peak, Milford Sound

My mother was born in New Zealand, and lived her life there until she met my father, and embraced her new life in the United States, becoming an American.

New Zealand is a beautiful island country located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, about 900 miles east of Australia. I cannot believe how many people I have talked to who think that when the tides out you can walk to Australia from New Zealand! 900 miles would be quite a high tide!

New Zealand is composed of three main islands, with several smaller islands as well. These islands are the North Island, South Island and Stewart Island.  I have lived on two of these islands and visited the third. Because of the remoteness of this country, it was one of the last lands to be inhabited by humans.

New Zealand was first settled by travelling Polynesians in 1250-1300. These indigineous people were known as Maoris and are the native people of New Zealand to this day.

In 1893, New Zealand was the first nation to grant all women the right to vote. In 1907, New Zealand was declared a British dominion, with a self-governing status.

New Zealand is a long (990 miles) and narrow (250 miles) country, with over 9,000 miles of coastline. There are two high mountain peaks, with Mt. Ruapehu (over 9,000 ft) in the North Island and Mt. Cook (over 12,000 ft) in the South Island.

The climate is mild and subtropical, with the main cities receiving over 2.000 hours of sunshine per year.Yet in the South Island, we find the Franz Josef glacier (which I have stood on top of), icing and inching its way across the land. More penguin species are found in New Zealand than in any other country.Indigenous animals include the Tuatara bird, and the flightless kiwi.

Wool was the main export, as there are more sheep than people. But in the 1960's the worth of wool declined and the main export now is dairy and wine.
Mt Tangariro

With this country, home to such amazing, heart-stoppingly beautiful vistas and flora, the average life expectancy of a female is  82 years and for a male 78 years. This is due primarily to the laid-back lifestyle and easy living in the mild climate.
Tomorrow we continue with exploring New Zealand with a tour of Maori Art.
