3.How did Halloween get its name?

c.It's always been called that

Answers: 1-d Younger people were using Halloween as an excuse to commit pranks in the neighborhoods. As time went by, the pranks began to escalate into expensive vandalism, and in some cases violence. The school boards, urged to "do something" by the parents, got together with the town councils to come up with a safe activity for their children. The town council, in turn, got the businesses and locals to all co-operate in giving the children candy, to keep them out of mischief.
2-b Jack O'Lanterns were put out to frighten away evil spirits. When pumpkins were discovered, they were found to be much easier to carve, thus the transition.
3-a Christianity took the majority of its holidays from Pagan traditions, and renamed them. The Christians renamed this day "All Saint's Day." Since the Celts started their new day at sunset of the previous night, this became known as the evening of All Hallows (hallowed is a synonym for saint). From there it went to All Hallow's Eve, and then on to Halloween.

GARDEN UPDATE
Such nice weather for October! Lovely sunny days so plants are happy. Finally lost most of the snapdragons, so sad to see them go. They are my most popular photo request!

GARDEN GOODIES~SHARE OUR GARDEN RECIPE #0101 GREAT PUMPKIN CAKE
Cutest Fall cake ever! Everyone will be asking how you made it and if you used a special pan!
(1) pkg. (2-layer size) pound cake mix
(1) pkg. (8 oz.) Cream Cheese, softened
(1/4) cup butter, softened
(4) cups powdered sugar
Few drops each green, red and yellowfood coloring
(1) Ice Cream Cup Cone
Instructions:
Prepare cake batter and bake in 12-cup fluted tube pan as directed on package. Cool in pan 10 min. Invert cake onto wire rack; remove pan. Cool cake completely.
Meanwhile, beat cream cheese and butter in medium bowl with mixer until well blended. Gradually beat in sugar until well blended. Spoon 1/2 cup frosting into small bowl; stir in green food coloring until well blended. Spread half the green frosting onto outside of ice cream cone; set aside. Reserve remaining frosting for later use.
ADD red and yellow food colorings to remaining white frosting to tint it orange. Spread onto cake to resemble pumpkin. Invert ice cream cone in hole in top of cake for the pumpkin's stem. Pipe the reserved green frosting in vertical lines down side of cake.
Editor's Note:
For a more rounded Great Pumpkin Cake, use a tall 12-cup fluted tube pan. As the cake bakes, it rises and forms a rounded top. When cake is unmolded (upside-down), the bottom of the cake will be rounded. If the cake is baked in a shorter 12-cup fluted tube pan, the resulting cake will be flatter.
FUN IDEA
Place black gumdrops on sheet of waxed paper sprinkled with additional granulated sugar. Use a rolling pin to flatten each gumdrop, turning frequently to coat both sides with sugar. Cut into desired shapes with a sharp knife. Use to decorate frosted cake to resemble a jack-o'-lantern.
HOW TO PIPE FROSTING
Turn a resealable plastic bag into a handy piping bag for professional-looking decorated cakes. Simply spoon the frosting into the bag and seal the bag. Cut off a tiny piece from one of the bottom corners of the bag. Twist the bag at the top and holding the bag with one hand, guide the tip with the other. When you're done, the whole bag goes right into the garbage for easy cleanup!
