The Scents of Home

"Our dreams drink coffee with us as they put their arms around our children. They laugh at us at our poor falling-down selves and as we put ourselves back together once again at the table."

GARDEN UPDATE
Balmy weather for the end of November, certainly. It's late afternoon and 65F with light, gentle sunshine. The mums are sadly starting to fade, I will miss their vibrant hues; Bulbs will take their place with their happy faces after the holidays.

THE SCENTS OF HOME
While sitting at the family table on Thanksgiving, I looked around at the happy smiling faces as they dug into the good food, and I was reminded of Thanksgivings past and all the blessings in my life.

Growing up, Mom made the pies and sides and Dad used to make the turkey the night before, and pop it in the oven to cook slowly all night. All we slept, the bird gently roasted until at last, when you popped your head from under the covers, you wanted to fight your way out to the kitchen and devour that smell.

But first, church awaited and you had to get all 'gussied' up in your Sunday best. For me, it meant an hour of sitting in very uncomfortable tights and garter belts (it was before the days of pantyhose), with hats, gloves and patent leather shoes with a kitten heel. Mom always dressed us up and proudly showed us off. Most holidays she made our outfits, usually from the same big roll of fabric, so we all matched. You could tell our family from a mile away.

Then, once you were all dressed, you had to stand outside so the older kids could use the one bathroom to get ready. This was the hard part...just standing and not getting dirty, dusty, muddy or sitting anywhere. Then the whole family crammed into the station wagon and off to church you went, squished like a sardine between your two brothers. As they fought good-naturedly over something stupid, you scrunched down and made yourself invisible.

Church was long and in Latin, so impossible to understand. You couldn't fidget or make noise, or even read a book! So you watched people and saw the pretty dresses and hats, counted how many men had Jesus sandals and did you see the white shoes/white belt combo in the front row?

Finally church is over and you pile outside to the waiting car, which belches heat from sitting in the parking lot. Your two brothers are fighting now for real, and you really squish down to fairy size. Soon the drive is over and your street appears and all you can think about is that turkey dinner that awaits.

Dress clothes behind you, you happily skip into the sunny yellow kitchen, where the big bird proudly sits atop the huge round family table. Dad gives the blessing and we bow our heads and feel grateful for our food, as we think of the poor children in other countries who have none. Finally, everyone is reaching, stretching, talking and eating, all at once. The room is filled with a warm glow of belonging and the scents of home.
