Virtual Road Trip~Gravestone Art

"Little Girls"
Little girls are made of daisies and butterflies and soft kitty cat purrs
And all the precious memories of times that once were.

Little girls are made of angel's wings and giggles and a firefly's glow
And all the happy feelings, deep inside, that we all know.

Little girls are made of cinnamon and bubbles and fancy white pearls
And snowflakes and rainbows and ballerina twirls.

Little girls are made of sunshine and cupcakes and fresh morning dew,
And these are the reasons, little one, why everyone loves you.

VIRTUAL ROAD TRIP~GRAVESTONE ART
I am hoping that this road trip will stimulate your creativity! I have always been fascinated with old art and gravestones hold a wealth of information, as well as intriguing art. Here's what some of those symbols used on gravestones mean:
A soldier on a horse. If the horse has both front legs in the air, it means he probably died in battle; If one leg is raised, it means he died as a result of wounds received in battle; If the horse has all four legs on the ground, it means he died of natural causes.

Agnus Dei or Lamb of God
Ankh, Egyptian for Eternal Life
Anvil, Deceased Person was a Blacksmith
Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End
An arch symbolizes the Passage to Heaven
A Bird meant a messenger of God. Most common birds used were doves.
A broken bud symbolizes an untimely death
A butterfly symbolizes resurrection or the soul leaving the body
A century plant symbolizes everlasting life
The clock symbolizes death, the passing of time, mortality
An eagle symbolizes a Civil War Veteran
A white horse symbolizes good, a black horse, evil
A dog symbolizes loyalty, fidelity, watchfulness
A harp symbolizes praise to God; a broken string symbolizes mortality
A pair of shoes, usually with one overturned, symbolizes the loss of a child
A broken link symbolizes a broken link in the family
Sleeping child symbolizes death
A lion symbolizes strength
A skull represents death or mortality; a winged skull symbolizes an ascent into heaven
A lily-of-the-valley symbolizes innocence, purity, virginity

A garland symbolizes victory in death
A fallen tree symbolizes mortality
A weeping woman symbolizes sorrow, mourning
I bet the next time you get a chance to be at the cemetery, you will find yourself looking at these symbols in a different way!
