The Mary Lou Heard Memorial Garden Tour 2012

"Memorial"

I've had the garden tidied up,
As she would have me do.
This little pal who couldn't stay
To see the season through.
The flowers were her dearest friends,
The garden was her own,
I've watched her work, but never knew
The things that she had grown.
Her catalogues keep coming, and
Her garden magazines;
I run across the queerest names,
And study what they mean,
I read them all, from end to end,
And when the spring is here,
I'll have a garden just like hers,
As though my friend were near.

The topsy turveys are in bloom so tomatoes are on their way! I cannot wait, as I adore fresh off the vine tomatoes! I added the fertilizer for tomatoes sticks this week and all are soooo healthy and happy.

MARY LOU HEARD MEMORIAL GARDEN TOUR 2012

The Mary Lou Heard Memorial Garden Tour is a yearly, self-guided charity event held by the Mary Lou Heard Foundation, a California nonprofit organization dedicated to continuing Mary Lou’s life work. There are no tickets to buy; no price will ever be set for viewing the gardens. Instead, on Tour Weekend your cash or check free-will donations are joyfully gathered at any Tour garden!

Mary Lou Heard started the yearly garden tour in Orange County, Southern California, which focuses on 'real gardens by real people' in 1993. She used the donated profits to benefit her favorite charities, which include :
  • The Sheepfold,, a shelter for abused women and their children
  • The Orange County Foundation for Oncology Children and Families, supporting the families of children with cancer
  • The Mary Lou Heard Horticultural Scholarship Foundation
Sadly, Mary Lou died of colon cancer in 2002, and the event is carried on in her memory to this day. SHARE OUR GARDEN had our special garden paparazzi present who sent us some wonderful photos for you to enjoy and feel like you were on the tour yourself!

Here are some descriptions given of the gardens that were on the tour:
  • Take a trip around the world and back into time in our old world garden, where you'll find a French petite parterre and an English cottage knot garden...
  • Walk through the garden gate into an enchanted courtyard that takes you into our romantic colorful retreat...it takes us back to the little Irish cottage in County Clare we visit in our dreams...
  • Lush and a little bit wild, this garden reflects the owner's desire to create a woodland space which evokes tranquility and invite meditation...
  • This is a garden you have to see.The cottage style front intrigues the senses and offers hints of what is to come...
  • For years we cherished a vision of a tropical paradise. We remodeled, converted and now have a pacific island oasis where the lagoon, long waterfall, trees and flowers create a living rainforest with over 100 different species of plants...
And here are some photos, with photo credits to our secret paparazzi Paul & Ruth Butler, and Virginia Butler. Thanks, guys!
(Editor's Note: Due to the large volume of photos, we are not offering a Garden Giggle or Fauna picture today...they will return tomorrow.)
