A Garden Means Peace

"Leisure"
William Henry Davies, 1911

What is this life, if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare

No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows

No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass

No time to see, in broad day light,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night

No time to turn at beauty's glance
And watch her feet, how they can dance

No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began

A poor life this, if, full of care
We have no time to stand and stare.

GARDEN UPDATE
The sun may be out but it sure isn't warm! That wind will cut right through you while the sunshine beckons and promises a pretty day. Even the tulips don't want to open, it's too cold!

A GARDEN MEANS PEACE
When you were planning your dream garden, I bet you factored in that you wished for a tranquil place. Since April is National Stress Awareness Month, I thought I'd be remiss not to mention the benefits of gardening.

Gardening has been a godsend for me as it allows me that time to 'space out' and commune with nature. I am outside, in the fresh air, listening to the birds sing and ravens scold one another and soaking in the sunshine.

As with the seasons, we all go through seasons of the soul and gardening provides a great place to work out problems in your head, to wax poetic or to just get in touch with yourself.

Gardening has been proven to lower blood pressure, improve depression and stimulate creativity. I look at it as hereditary, as my mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and all my siblings have had gardens. Even the men in our family followed the natural lifestyle.

It's pretty addicting and what is so great about gardening is that you see immediate results most times. You learn many life lessons, such as 'Hard work pays off", "Play nice", "Patience", or my mom's school motto: "Success crowns effort!"

So, look forward to that garden work. Weeding can be the worst, as well as trimming or any other physically demanding work. Think of it as a free workout without going to a gym PLUS you get to enjoy the results, knowing they occurred by your own hand.

GARDEN GIGGLE
It's SO cold...
  • I'm shivering like a mobster in a tax office
  • It's so cold that the local flasher was caught "describing" himself to women
  • You light a candle and the flame freezes
  • Your shadow freezes to the sidewalk
  • You have to break the smoke off the chimney
  • You have to open the fridge to heat the house
  • Police tells a robber to freeze, and he does
  • that Bill Clinton is sleeping with his own wife in order to keep warm
  • that the Statue of Liberty put the torch INSIDE her dress
  • the lawyers had their hands in their own pockets
  • People look forward to having a fever
  • Mail carriers watch out for both dogs and polar bears
  • You bake a cake, set it out to cool and 10 minutes later it's frosted
  • The fire department advises you to set your house on fire
  • Prisoners were begging for the electric chair
  • This morning I saw one dog jump starting another dog
  • Our squirrels were burning sterno
  • When I put on my coat to take out the garbage, it didn't want to go!
  • The rock rattling around in your shoe is your toe
  • Richard Simmons is wearing shorts that almost come to mid-thigh
  • The steam off my head created a war between two Indian villages
  • Only people with names like 'Bob' and 'Ed' have time to write their names in the snow
  • The cat's face freezes in the birdbath
