Today is National Frugal Fun Day...a day to have fun inexpensively! We challenge you to try to do something- for free or cheap! If you use your imagination, the possibilities are almost endless. Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Go on a bike or walking hike. The Fall leaves are on display.
- Have a picnic in the park, or your back yard.
- Invite some friends or neighbors over for a garage party and dance.
- Go fly a kite.
- Pull out the those old board games or puzzles that you have stored in the basement.
- Play cards with some friends.
- Visit a model home and get decorating ideas
- See what your library is offering
- Go to the dog beach
- Feed the ducks!
See what you can come up with! You don't need a ton of money to get out there and have fun!
DOG HALLOWEEN COSTUMES
GARDEN UPDATE
Had to wear a sweater this morning while watering. It was 55F and brisk!!Made for easy watering though. Hubby said a bird explored the suet balls, but so far no big rush to them. I think once the feeders are empty I won't fill them up and let them discover the suet.
KISSES AND HUGS
The phrase "XOXO" is a not-uncommon way to close a letter, email or text message. It means "hugs and kisses," although that's reversed -- the Xs are kisses and the Os hugs. But there's no obvious link between these two letters and their associated acts. Where do they come from?
The X-as-kiss most likely has origins from the Middle Ages. Due to low literacy rates at the time, many people were unable to write even their own names. For them, the X became a convention used as a signature. With the X also signifying the St. Andrews' Cross (and, perhaps, the word ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ -- Greek for "Christ"), it also therefore established the signature as one carrying an oath of significant meaning to the signer. At the time, one further affirmed his vow by kissing the X, signifying a connection with the signature beyond mere words. Over time, the "X" therefore came known as the kiss symbol. (And, most likely, the term "sealed with a kiss" has the same origin.)
While most agree that the above is why "X" means "kiss," there is no consensus around the origins of O-as-hug. Most agree that the shortcut developed in the United States, most likely around the late 1800s or early 1900s. Some believe that Jewish immigrants to the United States, unwilling to use the cross, adopted the "O" instead, but the evidence for that is weak. (Given that tic-tac-toe developed at around the same time, perhaps the two are related, but that is entirely speculation.) We don't know the true origins of the "O" hug, and, most likely, never will.

Unbelievably easy to make...perfect for outdoor parties. Instead of cutting into squares these can be cut with cookie cutters for a fun floater for hot chocolate or oatmeal.

You Will Need:
(1 1/2) cup water, divided
(4) envelopes unflavored gelatin
(3) cup sugar
(1 1/4) cup light corn syrup
(1/4) tsp salt
(2) t vanilla extract
(1 1/2) cup powdered sugar, divided
Instructions:
Spray a 9X13" baking pan with pam. Line with wax paper; coat wax paper with pam and set aside.
Pour 3/4 cup water into a medium bowl and sprinkle gelatin over top; let stand for 5 minutes.
Place sugar, corn syrup, remaining water, salt and vanilla in heavy saucepan; bring to a boil.(Editor's Note: For different colors and flavors, add a small amount of unsweetened drink mix powder to tje mixture on the stove as you are heating it.) Cook over high heat about 9 minutes, until mixture reaches the soft-ball stage, or 234 to 243 degrees on a candy thermometer. Beat hot mixture slowly into gelatin mixture for about ten minutes, or until very stiff.
Pour into prepared pan; smooth top with spatula. Let stand overnight uncovered until firm.
Invert baking pan onto surface covered with one cup of powdered sugar; peel off paper. Cut into square with a knife; roll in remaining powdered sugar to coat. Makes about 2 dozen.
