The Amazing Paper Art of Anna Wili-Highfield

Editor's Note: This is a remake of an accidentally deleted blog for August 31, 2012
Each morning sees some task begin,
Each evening sees it close;
Something attempted, some done,
Has earned a night’s repose.

DID YOU KNOW...?
if you ever wondered if those "Seen on TV" things work, especially the tortilla shell maker, Aunt Ruth got one from her kids for her birthday. She made turkey burritos with a wheat tortilla shell and they were great! She shares that if you use the smaller corn tortillas to microwave them on top of a wet paper towel for about 30 seconds first and then they will not slip out of the pan.

GARDEN UPDATE
Kinda of an icky day today with all the humidity.
LABOR DAY

In 1882, Matthew Maguire, a machinist, first proposed the holiday of Labor Day. Oregon was the first state to make it a holiday in 1887. By the time it became a federal holiday in 1894, thirty states officially celebrated Labor Day.

GARDEN GOODIES~THE AMAZING ART OF ANNA WILI-HIGHFIELD

Anna-Wili Highfield is a Sydney based artist. After studying fine arts, Anna-Wili worked for several years as a scenic artist for Opera Australia before realising her paper and copper pipe animals.

Her paper sculptures are created from archival cotton paper that is painted and sewn together. The copper pipe is bent and manipulated to create forms reminiscent of line drawings.

The biodegradable paper animals are created from archival cotton paper that is painted by hand and then sewn together to create the animal’s shape. Some figures use recyclable copper pipes to give them a sturdy frame, or in the case of birds, to give them movable wings.

The cutest factor is off the charts on this cute dish! For the skinny-minded, you could substitute neufcatel cheese for less fat. It is sometimes sold as Low Fat Cream Cheese. These would be perfect for a potluck, slumber party or as an hors d'oeuvre appetizer.

You Will Need:
(1) 8oz pkg cream cheese, softened
(2) cups finely shredded Pepper Jack Cheese (8 oz)
(1 1/4) cups finely chopped smoked almonds
(16) julienne carrots (from a 10 oz bag)
(32) sliced almonds, toasted (2 tablespoons)(Editor's Note: To toast sliced almonds, sprinkle in ungreased heavy skillet. Cook over medium heat 5 to 7 minutes, stirring frequently until nuts begin to brown and then stirring constantly until nuts are light brown.)

Instructions:
Mix cheeses in a bowl until blended. Place smoked almonds on small plate. For each mouse, shape 2 tablespoons cheese mixture into an egg shape; roll in smoked almonds.

For tail, insert 1 carrot strip into the wide end of each mouse. For ears, insert 2 sliced almonds, pointed side up, into the narrow end. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 2 hours or until firm.

NATURE PATTERNS
I was introduced to a new book called "How To Be An Explorer of the World" by Keri Smith. It stimulates your creativity and teaches you to look for the unexpected. As my challenge, I chose nature patterns. Science is now looking to nature for patterns to explain some of life's mysteries.

I confined myself to our back yard and front patio. Once you train your eye to see patterns, they are all over the place! It is like you missed them before.

Some of the objects I used for patterns were an old rusty fire grate, a chimney brush, lawn chair fabric, dirt, concrete, wood, plants, flowers, stones, feathers, metal and sky.

You could use these patterns to make an awesome quilt pattern; many wonderful website backgrounds; a cute handmade card or gift tag; labels for organizing or for gift jars, iron-on t-shirts or pillows; a handmade throw or blanket, or simply frame the images. The possibilities are endless and will forever remind you of your garden in its prime.

Here are some of the patterns I found!

GARDEN UPDATE
What an interesting day! My friend, Natalie and I visited the non-profit community co-op called Squash4Friends in Hesperia. They provide squash and other produce for the community. You can leave a donation or just take it for free. No one judges you. It is run by volunteers and is the brainchild of retired Sheriff's Lt. Jim Hill. The land was donated by local community leaders and it is a great place for foreign exchange students to come and learn about America, at the ground level. Of course, while we were there, we took home enough tomatoes and squash, along with a donation from another friend of figs and plums, to go to 7 adults and 16 children! Everyone went home with eggs (my donation), figs, satsuma plums, prickly pear cactus fruit, tomatoes and a smile. The power of money was not involved, it was the power of community.

HOW HURRICANES GET THEIR NAMES
Since Europeans first came to the Americas and the Caribbean where hurricanes occur, hurricanes have been named using a variety of systems. First they were named after Catholic saints. Later on, the latitude-longitude positions of a storm’s formation was used as a name. This was a little too cumbersome to use in conversation.

Military meteorologists started giving female names to storms during World War II, and in 1950 the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) adopted the method. The WMO devised a system of rotating, alphabetical names. (Names can be retired at WMO meetings by request from a nation that has been hit by the storm. The name is then not used for 10 years, which makes historic references and insurance claims easier.)

In 1979, the system was given a dose of political correctness: male names were added to the Atlantic hurricanes list, as were French and Spanish names, reflecting the languages of the nations affected by the storms. Eastern Pacific hurricanes started using male names the previous year.

Today, the WMO uses six lists of 21 names (Q, U, X, Y and Z names are not used) that it cycles through every six years, with the gender of the season’s first storm alternating year to year, and genders alternating through the rest of the hurricane season. If there are more than 21 named storms in a year, as there were in 2005, the rest of the storms are named for letters in the Greek alphabet.

Occasionally, a storm suffers something of an identity crisis and has its name changed. This happens when a storm crosses from one ocean to another, or if it dies down and then redevelops.

Will My Name Be a Hurricane This Year?

If your name is Oscar, then yes. Here’s the 2012 list: Alberto, Beryl, Chris, Debby, Ernesto, Florence, Gordon, Helene, Isaac, Joyce, Kirk, Leslie, Michael, Nadine, Oscar, Patty, Rafael, Sandy, Tony, Valerie, William.
